This is not an ad though it may come off as one. I have just purchased the new Saul Williams/Trent Reznor collaboration and am in need of release. "The Inevitable Rise And Liberation Of Niggy Tardust" is bar none the most impressive piece of art I have been graced to hear in most of a lifetime. Saul's albums have a nature that breaks so many boundaries between poetry and music that even when they are separated have power, but as a whole can leave you thinking with a clarity seen only in the highly elevated spirituals. When I listen to Saul's albums I have to have the lyric sheets on hand as he tends to layer metaphors on top of each other like philo dough. Reznor as a producer on the album has made something that like all of his projects feels complete. Going far beyond traditional beats for a "hip-hop" album he has made a sound that in Saul's previous work was struggling to birth itself. In Saul's writing there is always an all encompassing array of subject matter, style and tone and here Reznor has matched that feeling in the music. Both artists have done things that forever changed me. Saul, in a spoken word performance he did after a relative of his passed, brought an entire audience to tears reading poems most of us had read before. The projection of emotion was unreal. Likewise Reznor in his tour for "The Fragile" floored me with his command of visuals and the overpowering feeling of the music (you could physicaly feel the music in all it's layers). I still have yet to see a show that rivals the honesty found in theirs. I am writing this as a show of support towards their future projects but also to let you know how accessible they have made this to you. Listen to the music or something resembling Ronald Reagan with tentacles with hunt you down with a rusty shiv.
